Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden
Kirstenbosch is South Africa's famous national botanical garden located on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain and is home to more than 22000 indigenous plants including the pincushion protea. It is set against the backdrop of Table Mountain and Devil's Peak and was established in 1913 to protect the large number of flora. It is part of the Cape Floral Kingdom which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2004. The Cycad Garden is home to a family of plants that date back to 200 million years ago. There are two paths, the Skeleton Gorge and the Nursery Ravine, which go up to Table Mountain for keen hikers. Robben Island Robben Island was once home to South African famous political prisoners. The island is 9km offshore from Cape Town and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999. For centuries this island has been used as a mental institution, a hospital, a prison and a military base. It is most famous as being a political prison during aparthied. Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of the 27 years in prison on this island. Two Ocean Aquarium The Two Ocean Aquarium is located at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town. It opened on the 13 November 1995 and has seven large galleries with large viewing windows. Some of the galleries include the Atlantic Ocean Gallery, the Cape Fur Seal Exhibit and the I&J Predator Exhibit. It is also possible to scuba dive with tooth sharks if you hold a Padi Open Water Certificate. |
